My Professional Journey

Activities Undertaken Since 2024

Reflections, Milestones, and Growth in a Transformative Era

The dawn of 2024 marked not only the beginning of a new year but also a pivotal chapter in my professional life. As I reflect on the path I have travelled since then, I am both humbled and energised by the spectrum of activities I have undertaken, each an inflection point shaping my skills, perspective, and ambitions. This blog chronicles my professional pursuits, highlighting the achievements, challenges, collaborations, and discoveries that defined my experience.

Major Projects and Accomplishments

American British Canadian travelling fellowship

In June 2024 I was honoured to make up part of the British contingent of ABC travelling fellows touring North America North American hospitals and academic institutes. This prestigious enabled me to visit three centres in Canada including the Canadian Orthopaedic Association meeting and five centres in the United States including attending the American Orthopaedic Association meeting. At each centre we were invited to give lectures in our areas of clinical practise, so mine included lectures about the history of Birmingham and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, the treatment of infected endoprosthetic replacements, management of metastatic bone disease in the United Kingdom, and extreme limb-salvage techniques.

Overcoming Challenges

  • Adapting to remote work arrangements remained a recurring challenge. I dedicated time to refining virtual collaboration skills and implementing digital etiquette best practices.
  • Managing stakeholder expectations in a rapidly changing environment required careful communication and agile responses to feedback.

Professional Networking and Community Engagement

Conferences and Speaking Engagements

During the South African orthopaedic association meeting I was invited as a former ABC travelling fellow to engage with South African orthopaedic trainees in a mentoring session discussing that aims and objectives trying to facilitate them achieving their goals.

Mentorship and Peer Support

I was invited to present at the South African Orthopaedic Association meeting in Pretoria in September 2025 where I delivered lectures about infected endoprosthetic replacements as well updating members of their South African Orthopaedic Oncology society about recent developments in guidelines and management of metastatic bone disease in the United Kingdom.

These experiences honed my public speaking skills and increased my visibility within the professional community.

This is the first randomised control trial in this area in the United Kingdom, and we aim to recruit 20 sites over the next 3.5 years around the United Kingdom.

Surgical training

BASK revision knee instructional course, October 2025

I have enjoyed being part of the faculty for the BASK (British Association for Surgery of the Knee) revision knee instructional course for the last few years. This year the venue had moved to Nottingham University for two days of detailed lectures and breakout sessions covering all aspects of revision knee arthroplasty.

Leadership and Management

Leading Teams Through Change

Throughout 2024 and into 2025, I took on greater leadership responsibilities, guiding my team through periods of strategic realignment regarding cancer genomics at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.

Strategic Visioning

I was invited to attend the Sarcoma UK early diagnosis in sarcoma steering group to try to find routes towards early diagnosis in bone and soft-tissue sarcoma. Further meetings are planned to standardise and harmonise routes to diagnosis for these rare diagnoses.

Personal Growth and Reflections

Resilience and Adaptability

  • The rapidly evolving workplace required not only technical knowledge but also emotional intelligence. I invested in mindfulness and stress management practices to stay agile and resilient.

  • Learning to navigate ambiguity became a cornerstone of my approach, enabling me to lead with confidence even in uncertain times.

Celebrating Achievements and Learning From Failure

  • I made it a practice to celebrate small wins—whether it was completing a complex project or receiving positive feedback from colleagues.
  • Equally, I viewed setbacks as opportunities for growth, reflecting on missteps and using them as lessons for future endeavours.

Looking Ahead

As I look to the future, the experiences and insights gained since 2024 serve as a solid foundation for continued growth. The professional activities I have undertaken not only shaped my expertise but also deepened my sense of purpose and connection within my field. I remain committed to advancing my skills, embracing innovation, and contributing positively to my organisation and the wider community.

This journey, though marked by challenges, has been one of transformation and accomplishment. I am excited for the chapters yet to be written and the opportunities that lie ahead.
