Cancer and Tumour Care

Bone cancers and tumours are rare but serious conditions that require expert and compassionate care. Our service offers comprehensive support from diagnosis to recovery, ensuring you feel informed, reassured, and supported throughout your journey.

We assess and treat both benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) bone tumours. Using

  • advanced imaging,
  • biopsy techniques,
  • and multidisciplinary expertise,

we accurately diagnose the type and stage of the tumour. Every treatment plan is personalised — whether that involves careful monitoring, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or a combination.

Our focus is not just on removing the tumour, but also on preserving function, minimising pain, and supporting your emotional wellbeing. We work closely with oncology, radiology, physiotherapy, and counselling teams .

Limb-Saving Surgery

In the past, many people with bone cancer or aggressive bone tumours faced the prospect of losing a limb through amputation. Thanks to modern advances in orthopaedic oncology, this is now rarely the case.

Limb-saving surgery (also known as limb-salvage surgery) is a highly specialised operation where the tumour is carefully removed while preserving as much of the healthy bone, muscle, and nerves as possible. Once the tumour is taken out, the affected bone is reconstructed — often with a metal implant (prosthesis), a bone graft, or a combination of both.

The goal is to completely remove the cancer while maintaining limb function, so patients can continue to walk, use their arm, or return to daily activities with minimal limitations. This approach avoids amputation in the vast majority of cases.

Metastatic Bone Disease

Metastatic bone disease happens when cancer from another part of the body — such as the breast, lung, prostate, kidney, or thyroid — spreads to the bones. This is not the same as a primary bone cancer, but it can cause pain, fractures, and reduced mobility, making expert care essential.

Our role is to provide comprehensive treatment and support. This often involves a combination of:

  • Accurate diagnosis with scans and tests

  • Pain management and medicines to strengthen the bone (such as bisphosphonates)

  • Surgical treatment where needed, to stabilise or strengthen weakened bones and prevent fractures

  • Radiotherapy or systemic cancer treatments, delivered as part of a multidisciplinary oncology plan

  • Rehabilitation and physiotherapy to help restore movement and independence

The focus of treatment is not only on controlling the disease but also on relieving symptoms, protecting mobility, and supporting overall wellbeing. Many patients benefit from surgery that helps stabilise the bone, allowing them to remain active and avoid complications.

Complex Arthroplasty

Revision Joint Replacements

Expert care for patients whose previous joint replacement or revision surgery has not been successful or failed, restoring function and quality of life.

A revision joint replacement is surgery to replace or repair an existing hip or knee replacement. In some cases, the revision itself may fail due to problems such as loosening of the implant, infection, instability, bone loss, or persistent pain. This can be frustrating and may limit your mobility or independence.

We provide specialist assessment to identify the cause of the failure and plan the most effective treatment. Options may include further revision surgery with advanced techniques, bone grafting, or custom implants. Our focus is always on relieving pain, restoring stability, and helping you return to everyday activities with confidence.

Infected Replacement Joints

Specialist care for infections that develop after hip or knee replacement surgery,  focused on restoring comfort, mobility, and peace of mind.

Although joint replacement surgery is highly successful, in rare cases the artificial joint can become infected. This is known as a prosthetic joint infection. It may occur soon after surgery or even years later, and can cause pain, swelling, warmth around the joint, stiffness, or persistent wound discharge.

Treatment is essential, as infections can damage the surrounding tissues and affect the function of the replacement joint. Care usually involves:

  • Accurate diagnosis with scans, blood tests, and joint fluid analysis

  • Specialist antibiotics, sometimes given directly into the joint

  • Surgical treatment to clean the joint, replace some components, or, in severe cases, perform a full revision (replacement of the implant)

  • Close follow-up and rehabilitation to help you regain movement and confidence

Our aim is not only to clear the infection but also to protect your new joint, restore mobility, and improve quality of life. With expert care, most patients can return to an active lifestyle after treatment.
